Etymology

'The enclosure(s) or river meadow(s)', v. hamm , cf. Walter atte Hamme , William atte Hamme 1332 SR, Hamworthy and Hammoon pars. both supra ; Hampreston is on R. Stour. The affix Preston is 'priest farm', from prēost and tūn , probably in allusion to lands here belonging to the College of Wimborne Minster, v. Hutch3 3433–4, VCHDo 2110. The other affixes are manorial. The largest of the four DB manors of Hame was held by Aiulfus Camerarius 'Aiulf the chamberlain', v. VCHDo 3100. (D )aumarle is from the family of Geoffrey de Albemarle mentioned in connection with Hamme in 1216 ClR, cf. William Daumarle 1333HarlCh , v. Longham infra .
