Etymology
For etymology and for other early forms, some of which may strictly belong here, v. Gussage All Snts par. infra . The affixes Dina (u )nt and Boun (t ), Bo (h )un are manorial. Roland de Dinan (t ) held this manor in 1167–8 P, 1212 Fees (92); the family of de Bohun , earls of Hereford and Essex, held it for at least a century, the first of them to be noted here being Milo de Bo (h )un 1275 RH, v. Hutch3 3133–4. St Michael is from the dedication of the church. The late alternative name Middle Gussage (first noted 1774 Hutch1) is from its position between Gussage All Sts par. and Gussage St Andrew (in Six. Handley par.). The form Great Gissich 1370 Pat probably belongs here, Great perhaps having arisen from a misunderstanding of Michel (Michael ) as from OE micel 'great'; the form Gussich Bethum 1374 ib may also belong here, if Bethum is an error for Bowum (representing Bo (h )un ).
