Etymology

Hyde Fm (SY 619953), Hide house 1650 Hutch3, tenement called Hide 1670Sheridan , Hide 1795 Boswell, 1811 OS, Hyde Farm House 1839TA , to be associated with John atte Hude , Willic ' (probably for Willicin , a diminutive of William) atte Hude 1327, William atte Hyde 1332 both SR, from hīd 'a hide of land' (originally an amount of land sufficient to support one free family and its dependants), with ME  atte 'at the' in the surname forms. Hutch3 2 300 is no doubt correct in supposing that this holding may be the whole or part of the 2 hides which were attached to the manor of Frampton in 1086 DB (VCHDo 382) and which Queen Matilda had given to the abbey of St Stephen's at Caen (for which v. Frampton Court supra ). Hyde Fm gives name to Hyde Clift Plant.(alongside R. Frome, v. clif 'river-bank'), (Young) Hyde Crook, Hyde Crookbelt (Crook 1670, 1671Sheridan , (Lr ) Hyde Crook , Hyde Crook Plant . 1839TA , probably from ME  crok (OE  *crōc) 'a crook, a bend' with reference to the sharply angled shape of the par. bdy at the NW tip of the par., cf. Crockway Fm in M. Newton par. infra ), & Hyde Nursery (1839TA ), v. also f.n. sections infra .
