The first part of the name may be a p.n. (from gāt (gen.pl. gāta ) 'goat' and (ge)mǣre 'boundary', mere 1 'pool', or mōr 'moor'), or a surname from such a p.n., cf. the entry in lHy 3CottCh (xxv. 34): Ego Ricardus de Gatemore dediDomino Rogero filio Pagani militiomnia que habuiin villa de Gatemorestone , v. tūn . The name is now only used of two fields; the earlier hamlet may have been destroyed by fire (Hutch3 1377).
