Etymology

Boat Knoll (SY 866813), Boat Knoll 1774 Hutch1, Knoll 1328, 1358 Hutch3, Knowle 1795 Boswell, Boyt Knowl 1770 RCHM, cf. Knolegroue 1640Weld 1, Knowle grove 1686ib , 'the hillock', v. cnoll , with grāf(a); the first el. is probably a surname, cf. Welthen Boyt 1664 HTax (Langton H.); the place, described by Hutch1 1 141 as 'once a manor and hamlet, now only two grounds of 56 acres', was probably the home of Henry atte Knolle , Roger atte Knolle 1327SR , Lucy atte Knolle , William atte Knolle 1332 SR, v. atte ; there is a tumulus marked here (6″).
