Etymology

Possibly 'farm called after Rǣdel or Rǣdla', from the OE  pers.n. Rǣdel or Rǣdla and -ingtūn , as suggested by Fägersten 121, cf. Redlingfield Sf (DEPN s.n.). Both pers.ns. are short forms of names in Rǣd -; Rǣdel is found as the name of a moneyer (Redin 139) and Rǣdla would correspond to OHG  Rātilo ; the DB, Exon form Rag - is probably for Rad - (cf. ANInfl 117), thus representing the pers.n. stem Rǣd - without the -el or -la suffix. However, in view of the ME forms with -o -, -i -, and -u -, Professor Löfvenberg suggests that the name may mean 'farm belonging to a place called Hrēodlēah ' ('reed clearing', v. hrēod , lēah ); for the early a -forms, cf. Radipole par. infra , Redwick Gl 3136–7. For the additions juxta Corfe and in Purbik , v. Corfe C. and Isle of Purbeck supra . There is mention of a water mill here in 1529 Hutch3.
