Etymology

'(At) the bank or shore', v. ōra 1 , cf. Fitzworth and Green Island supra , Goathorn in Studland par. infra . The place lies on a small promontory on the shore of Poole Harbour and was at one time a port, cf. Ower Passage infra . The bounds of Ower are given in n.d. (e15) MiltRoll m. 4r.
