Etymology

Challow Fm (SY 964821), Challow Hill, Challow Fm , Challow Hill 1844TA , Chalwyll 1510 Hutch3, Challway downe , Challway Farm 1716DCMDeed , Challows 1774 Hutch1, 1861 Hutch3, Callows 1795 Boswell, Challow (Hill )1811 OS.The forms are late and discrepant and there is perhaps more than one name among them; Chalwyll may mean 'cold spring or stream', v. c(e)ald, wella , with reference to the small stream shown (6″) as rising near Challow Fm; Challway may mean 'chalk way', v. c(e)alc, weg , and refer to the old track from Corfe C. which skirts Challow Fm and leads W up Challow Hill (part of the chalk ridge) towards Rempstone infra (cf. Hutch3 1530), but Chall - in this form may only be a reduced form of Chalwyll ; C (h )allow (s ) is probably for Challway (s ) with loss of stress in the second syllable, the -s being elliptical or pseudo- manorial.
