'Æðelgifu's wood', from the OE  fem. pers.n. Æðelgifu and wudu, as the form Aileveswode hundret c. 1086 GeldR cited for Rowbarrow hundred supra shows in spite of the analogical gen. -s , v. -es 2 . Later forms show confusion or alternation with the OE  fem. pers.n. Æðelgȳð . For both pers.ns., the first of which occurs in independent use in DB as Ailueua , the tenant TRE of three virgates in Morden par. infra , v. Feilitzen 183, and for AN loss of intervocalic ð in Æðel -, reduction of -gifu , and loss of w in -wudu , v. Feilitzen 76, 102, 260.
