Etymology

Hawkcombe Lane (ST 859184), named from a group of fields, near the par. bdy, called Hawcombe (Fd )1842TA (this par.), Hawkham Cl , Hawkham Coppice 1837ib (Fontmell M.), which are to be identified with on holencumb 956 (14) ShaftR (S 630) in the Anglo-Saxon bounds of Compton A., coinciding with to holencumbe , of þanne cumbe 932 (15) ib (S 419) in the Fontmell M. bounds, v. hol 2 (wk.obl. holan ) 'hollow, deep', cumb 'valley'.
