Etymology

The Street (local, SY 365936), the single main street of the village, also the Dorchester-Exeter road on the probable line of a major Roman road.A part of the par., and no doubt a settlement along this road, was called Strete 1343 Ipm (one fee here, and one at Charmouth itself, held by abbot of Forde), 1399 Cl, 'lands called Strete ' Hutch3, n.d. Penn (Dugd V376), apud Stret videlicet inter boscum de Stocca et mare n.d. (15) Forde ('that is between the wood of Stocca and the sea'), v. strǣt , cf. viam Regalem , magnum iterad Lym 13 (15) Forde , via versus Lyme m13 (15) Forde , pasturasub chymininode Cernemue 1257 (15) Forde .
