Etymology

'Home farm by the valley bottom', from OE  boðm and hām-tūn. In the detailed study of this and similar names by Ann Cole, JEPN 2042, the first el. is taken to refer to 'the silted-up estuary of the R. Brit…a flat-floored, lowlying, easily flooded area some 0.5 by 2 km. with abruptly rising sides'.
