Etymology

Shatcombe Fm (ST 497025), Sotecumb '1268(p), Shotecumbe 1306 FF, Shotecombe 1412 FA, Schotecomb '1381Ct (p), Shatecombe 1412 FA, Shotcombe 1486 Ipm, Shatcombe 1811 OS, 1863 Hutch3, Shatcombe Field 1842TA , 'valley by the steep slope(s)', from *scēot and cumb , cf. the analogous Shatcombe in Netherbury par. infra . Shatcombe Fm lies at the head of a valley with steeply sloping sides in which R. Brit rises (several springs marked 6″). The steepest slopes to the W of the valley belong to White Sheet Hill q. v. infra , a name that contains the same, or a related, el., cf. also Scite Coppice infra . The forms Shap (t )combe 1515Ct , 1629DCMCt , Shapcombe fielde voc ' Whitelande 1635ib may also belong here, cf. Shatcombe in Wynford E. par. supra which is in fact 'sheep valley' with a late change Shap - > Shat -.
