Etymology
'Farmstead or settlement at the source of a stream', from ǣwyll 'spring, source' and tūn , thus identical in origin with Alton Ha 22, Alton Barnes and Priors W 317. The R. Piddle rises here; a spring is marked 6″.The affix Pancras (Latin Pancratius ), first recorded in the early 13th cent., is from the dedication of the church. There was an early division of the manor, described thus in 1774 Hutch1 2470: 'the two manors, or parcels of demesne land, now denominate and belong to two prebends in the church of Salisbury; viz. Alton -Borealis and Alton -Australis '. The former is earlier Prebend ' de Aulton in laico feodo in Northbury 1291 Tax, 'prebend of Aulton in Northbury '1306 Pat, Alton Boreal (is )1795 Boswell, 1796 DCMDeed, the latter is Prebend ' de Aulton in laico feodo in Suthbury 1291 Tax, Alton Pancras alias Alton Australl 1684WRO , Alton Australis 1795 Boswell, 'the north and south manors', v. norð , sūð , bury , borealis , australis , Austral Fm infra .
