Etymology
Probably, in spite of the relative rarity of early spellings with ME medial -e -, 'farmstead or estate of the princes', from OE æþeling (gen.pl. -a ) and tūn, cf. Allington L (DLPN 2), PN W 311. Alternatively, 'farmstead or estate called after Æþel (a )', from the OE pers.n. Æþel (a ) and -ingtūn .
