Etymology

Ward gave name to Richard de Warthe (1330SR ). The place lies above a stream and the name must be OE  waroð , 'bank, shore.' For such a use of ME  warth , cf. 'Marsh lands called the Warths al. the new recovered grounds' (1652ParlSurv , Gl ).
