Etymology

The second element in this name is probably OE  hylte , 'wooded place,' a derivative of holt, postulated for certain names in PN Sx xlv. One might take the first element to be OE  efn , 'level, smooth,' but the topography is not favourable. Emlett Hill is a fairly steep hill with South Emlett at its eastern end, while East and West Emlett are on other hills.
