Historical Forms

  • Choleputteford 1464 IpmR
  • Putford Jelyan al. Cholly Putford 1556 Deed
  • Churiputteford 1242 Fees787

Etymology

The name is probably identical with the earlier manor of Churiputteford 1242 Fees 787, Churc Potford 1303, Churche Poteford 1346 FA with later common confusion of r and l . If so, the first element may be cyric , 'barrow,' as the farm is not near the parish church.
