Etymology

The first element here is probably *Wemma , a pet-form of such an OE  name as Wēnmǣr or Wēnmund which, though not on record, would be regular formations. (Cf. OGer  Wenemar , Wanmund .) Blomé (66) suggests a river-name Wem , which Wallenberg (StudNP 2, 91) would connect with OE  wamm , wemm , 'stain, uncleanness,' and suggests that Wem (Sa) is so called from its situation in marshland.
