Historical Forms

  • Hulkynctore 16th Oliver
  • atte Holk 1317 Pat
  • atte Hulken 1340 SR

Etymology

The first element seems to be identical with that found in Sandick infra 352, Gunoak Wood (Co), Gomholke 1338Rental , Adelhulke Hy 8Rental (Loddiswell, D), on sand holcan 1044 OS Facs ii, Exeter xii (Dawlish, D), and on dod holcan KCD 739. All these names seem to contain the OE  holc (a ), 'hole,' 'cavity,' a derivative of hol , 'hollow,' etc. In the present name the reference is doubtless to the rock-basins on the tor here.
