Etymology

This name occurs also in Bridgerule and Morchard Bishop parishes, though no early forms have been found, and a further example has already been noted in Sussex. The only early form noted is that for Scotland in Godshill (Wt), which appears as Skotland in 1354 and 1371 (Ct ).Land so called was probably subject to some payment or customary tax. For such use of scot , v. NEDs. v. scot sb. 2.
