Elwill Dairy

Early-attested site in the Parish of Venn Ottery

Historical Forms

  • Ellewille 1333 SR

Etymology

The site is so close to the southern ellenford of the Ottery charter (v. infra 603 n.) that we are probably right in assuming that the ford was on the wielle or stream and that both alike take their names from an ellen or elder tree. v. Addenda, Part ii, xiv.
