Etymology

The first element may be an adjective allied to OE  hrēof , 'rough, scabby,' perhaps denoting an area much overgrown with bushes or shrubs. Cf. of hrofan hricge (KCD 655). For the possibility of such a form, cf. NEDs. v. rove sb 1.
