Etymology

The name must have referred to a part of the Loman valley held by 'cilds,' v. cild . The reason for the substitution of Chiffe or Chief for earlier Child is obscure. Possibly it marked the most important of the Lowman manors. Cf. Capheaton (PN NbDu 39), earlier Cappitheton , Magna Heton (from Latin caput ).
