Etymology

This name may be a compound of the British trev , 'homestead, village,' and isam (Mod. Welsh isaf ), 'lowest.' The place is not in a low situation, but might have been so named in distinction from other still higher settlements. If this is correct, it is identical with Trevisa (Co). Professor Ekwall would take the name to be a derivative of OE  trus , 'brushwood.'
