Etymology

'Hill by the Thrushel river.' The word ball , used to denote a rounded hill, is confined to Somerset and Devon. The earliest dated example is that found in the pers. name John att ' Balle (1327SR ), (So). The earliest occurrence of the word in a Devon place- name is in 1429, v. infra 688.
