Historical Forms

  • Wnston 1238 Ass
  • Woneston 1244,1254 Ass
  • Wonstone 1333 SR
  • atte Wonston 1374 SR

Etymology

The last form shows that the first element must be a descriptive epithet and not a pers. name. Possibly the name goes back to OE  æt (ga )n stāne , 'at the crooked stone,' cf. Windbow supra 420, and Langstone close at hand.
