Etymology

'(At the) wide ham(m).' The village does not lie low, so that the second element must be ham, or else hamm in the sense of enclosure. Johannes de Alba Mara or de Albemarle is first mentioned in connexion with the manor in 1242 (Fees) and the modern Damarel is for earlier D 'Albemarle . Albemarle commonly develops to Aumerle and this in combination with initial d has given the present Damarel .
