Etymology

This, as suggested by Blomé (122), is probably a compound of OE  cumb and þruh . The latter has various senses in OE, all going back to the idea of something hollowed out, and the term is also found in the p.n. Througham (Gl), OE  þruhham (BCS 180).Througham lies on the edge of a well-marked hollow; in Throwcombe the reference is doubtless to the shape of the combe.
