Etymology

This was one of the numerous places named from its position by the river Clyst supra 3. It was distinguished by the name of the family of Fomicum (Fomyson , Fomizoun ) first found in the parish in 1242 (Fees 779). The later name 'south farm' has reference perhaps to Monkerton to the north. Cf. Sowton supra 435. St Michael from the dedication of the church.
