Etymology

This name must be taken together with Galmpton infra 511 and Gammaton and Galmington supra 88, 91, and also with Galmington and Galhampton (So). For Galmington we have Galmetone (1199 FF), Galameton (1225 Ass) and for Galhampton Galampton (1248 FF). Professor Ekwall suggests that all these names alike go back to an OE  gafolmanna -tūn , 'farm inhabited by rent-paying peasants.' Cf. OE  gafolswān , 'rent-paying peasant,' and ME  gavelmanni recorded in Kent in the 13th cent. (Neilson's Customary Rents 8, 42, 44).
