Historical Forms

  • Suetecumbe 1302 Exon

Etymology

This may mean 'sweet valley,' v. cumb , with reference to its fertility or the excellence of the pasture. Cf. Sweetlands infra 650, and Sweterigge , Sweteford 13thCanonsleigh . But possibly the name is to be associated with the family of Thomas Suette or Suete , who was living in the parish in 1260 (DA 8).
