Etymology

Shute supra 184. As pointed out by Blomé (109), the place lies in the south-east corner of the parish. The Rychard of the 1381 reference is not known. In the Assize Roll reference there was a dispute about the ownership of land in la Shete juxta Shokebrok , one of the parties concerned maintaining that the correct spelling of the place-name was Shute . This proves that in the 14th cent, the vowel was sufficiently uncertain to give ground for a dispute in a Court of Law.
