Historical Forms

  • Swerdecote 1392 Exon
  • Swardecot 1765 D

Etymology

This would seem to correspond to an OE  sweorda cot (e ), 'cottage(s) of the swords,' but it is difficult to see how such a name could have arisen. Professor Ekwall and Dr Ritter agree in suggesting the possibility of an OE  pers. name *Sweorda (cf. ON Sverði ), while among other weapon- names Dr Ritter notes ON  Hiálmi , Skapti , Spióti . Cf. also OE  Billa . We have the strong form of this name in Swardeston (Nf), DBSuerdestuna .
