Etymology

The identification is not certain, but is highly probable. If correct, the first element is perhaps the OE  deorc , ME  durke , 'dark,' etc., used as a ME pers. name. Cf. John Durke 1333SR (Devon), Druxton supra 172, and Dassells Green (Herts), Derkeshale n.d. AD iv, 1287Ass , 1307SR (p).
