Etymology

v. sceaga . There is still much woodland in the parish. The parish is sometimes known as Shaugh Prior (Pryoursheagh 1559Deed ), from the fact that the manor from the earliest times belonged to Plympton Priory. The pronunciation of the place- name among old people is [ʃei], probably for earlier [ʃeiv] or [ʃeif].v. Introd. xxxv.
