Etymology

A possible parallel for the first element in this name is to be found in Warkworth (Nth), 12th cent, charter Wauercuurt , 1206, 1219FF , t. Hy 3 Wauercurt , 1220 Wells Wauerkeworthe , 1274 Ipm Warkewrthe . For Warkleigh one may suggest the possibility of an OE  wǣferce , 'spider,' derived from OE  (gange )-wǣfre , 'spider,' with the same formative suffix which is found in OE  lāwerce , 'lark,' v. leah .
