Etymology

'Salt valley,' cf. Salcombe supra 311. The manor belonged to the Dean and Chapter of Exeter from the time of the earliest records. It is said to have been granted to them by Aethelstan, but even if this is true it can hardly account for the addition of Regis which does not seem to appear before the 18th cent. v. Addenda, Part ii, xiv.
