Etymology

v. næss . The place is on a point of land between two creeks. Mayo (Mayow , Maheu ) represents the OFr  form of Matthew , referring to Matheu filius Johannis, who held the manors of Noss, Yealmpton, etc. (1284, 1303, 1316 FA, 1309 Cl).
