Etymology

A river-name Granta is not out of the question, though river-names do not as a rule seem to be compounded with land . For Grantley (Y) and Grantham (L)Ekwall (RN 183) suggests the possibility of an OE pers. name. The present p.n., like many other land-compounds, may contain a ME pers. name, here the OFr  graunt , 'great,' ModEng Grant .
