Etymology

This place and Merton infra 99 would seem to take their names from the river Mere which flows through the parishes.Since, however, no really early forms of this stream have been found (supra 10), it is more probable that mere originally denoted some large pool or stretch of marshy land extending over both parishes and that the stream is a late back-formation from the place-names. There is much marshland in the valley of the Mere. 'Peter' from the dedication of the church.
