Historical Forms

  • Tucabera, Tuicaberia 1086 DB(Exon)
  • Tu(i)chebere
  • Tukeber 1238 Ass
  • Twikeber 1238 Ass 1429 IpmR
  • Twycbare 1301 Ipm

Etymology

The first element is probably identical with that of Twickenham (Mx), Tuican hom 704 BCS 111, Tuicanhamm 793 BCS 265, Tuiccanham 948 (c. 1200) BCS 860. No OE  name Twicca is known, but we have a 9th cent. Twicga , the name of an East Anglian moneyer, found again probably in Twigworth (Gl), Twyggenuurthe (1242) v. PN Gl s. n. Twicca may be an unvoiced pet-form of this. Such unvoicing offers the only reasonable explanation of such a name as the 11th cent. Trump from Trumbeorht and the common Ecca beside Ecga . v. bearu .
