Etymology

This name, like Swilly infra 241, may be connected with the OE  swylle found in swyllan healas , a place on a stream (BCS 1036). Cf. OE  swilian , 'to wash,' and see further s. n. Swale Bank (PN Sx 353). The ground here is marshy.
