Etymology

This must take its name from some lost farm so called (v. tun ). The first element is possibly to be connected with the stem *skell , 'to resound,' found in OE  scyl , 'shrill, sonorous' (v. Redin 23), from which a pers. name *Scyl (l )a may have been formed. For initial sk and for ia v. Introd. xxxv, and cf. further Shilla Mill infra 220 and Skilgate (So), Scheligate DB, Schillagate 12th Buckland, Scilegate 1236 Fees, Skilegate 1242 Ass.
