Etymology

It is probable that this name has the same history as Enborne River (Berks), which was OE  alorburna , 'alder stream,' ME  Aleburne , v. RN 148. For the later addition of -ton , cf. Harberton supra 325. For Cnythes - it may be noted that one John le Cnigth , the 'knight,' was a juror in Haytor Hundred in 1242 (Fees 767).
