Etymology

The g is quite clear in the MS, but ig may possibly be for ī . If so the first element would seem to be the well-known OE  pers. name Beowulf , cf. the spelling biuulf in LVD and the survival of the name as Bowulf in Devon in the 12th cent. (1195 P). The burh refers to an ancient camp here.
