Historical Forms

  • Foleleghe 1267 Exon
  • Folingelegh 1280 FF
  • Folle 1462 Pat

Etymology

'Fola 's clearing,' v. ing , leah . The late appearance of inge in this name is difficult to account for unless we assume that the earlier form is really elliptical for a fuller Foling (e )leghe . This pers. name is not recorded, but would be the OE  fola , 'foal,' used as a pers. name. Cf. William Folia 1330SR (D).
