Etymology

This may, as suggested by Blomé (73), be a derivative of OE  fleot, 'stream,' but such a formation with ingtun would be difficult and we should have expected some forms in Flut -. Dr Ritter suggests derivation from an OE  pers. name Flita , 'striver,' of the nickname-type.
