Bidwell Barton

Early-attested site in the Parish of Newton St Cyres

Historical Forms

  • Bedewille, Bydewille 1302,1303 Exon
  • Bidewille 1333 SR

Etymology

No certainty is possible. In Bydemill Brook (W), which is near byde wil (KCD 767), byde is a stream- name, and it may be such here. A small tributary of the Creedy flows near the farm. Bidwell (infra 573), however, is not on a stream, neither is Bidwell in Quantoxhead (So), Bydewell 1279 Ass (p), and it is possible that both names contain the element discussed under Bidna supra 102.
