Etymology

The first element is probably, as suggested by Blomé (83), the gen. pl. of OE  wer, the place being by the Exe.The second element is mor, probably with reference to the flat marshy land just to the south. Hence 'marshy land near the fishing pools.' Wallenberg (StudNP 2, 92) notes that there is a Wear House on the other side of the Exe.
